Bike Specs

The Outlander 400 can carry up to 90 kg of payload on the rear rack. The rack up front can support an additional small load that weighs up to 45 kg, for a total of 135 kg.

This model is rated to tow 500kg, putting it on a level playing field with the rest of the competition (the average 2012 sport-utility with a midsize engine can tow 500 kg). If towing is a primary factor in your buying decision, this model will get the job done.
Four-wheel drive (4x4) comes standard on this Can-Am, sending power to all 4 wheels when necessary for better traction and stability. A front differential lock keeps the Outlander 400 stable on dicey terrain by preventing the wheel with less/no traction from free-wheeling.
An engine braking system (EBS) allows for safe descents down steep hills at very low speeds.

This Outlander features MacPherson strut front suspension. In the rear, you'll find an independent trailing arm.
In the front, travel is 7 in, while in the rear it is 8 in, a positive difference of 1 in. This means that the rear travels more than the front, which may signify that this model is designed to carry a lot of cargo (which would weigh down the rear and even the weight distribution). If the difference becomes too large, however, this vehicle runs the risk of bottoming out when navigating bumby, hilly terrain. The amount of travel up front is the same as the typical midsize sport-utility ATV. Furthermore, the rear suspension has 16% less than the norm in this segment. Extra suspension travel is very useful for hairy off-road scenarios, at the tradeoff of slightly less taut handling.

This model is powered by a 4-valve, liquid-cooled, SOHC, 400cc engine, placing it in the midsize displacement class.
Its standard electronic fuel injection makes for a more powerful and efficient engine through automatically mixing the right amount of air and fuel, but this comes at the cost of mechanical simplicity, and can result in more maintenance down the road.
With throttle bodies measuring 46 mm in diameter, this engine can inhale 15% more air than its midsize competitors.
A cylinder bore of 3.23 in and a stroke of 2.44 in make this engine oversquare, meaning that it is more powerful than a similarly-sized engine with a smaller bore.
The Outlander 400 comes standard with a CVT transmission. Engine braking is also included for finer speed control, especially when descending steep terrain
