WOOD SCULPTURE OF A TIMBILA PLAYER

The Chopi people of the coastal Inhambane Province are known for a unique kind of xylophone called mbila (pl: timbila) and the style of music played with it. Many Chopi left Mozambique at a young age to seek work in the South African mines kept the art of timbila alive and today the intricate rhythms and pulsating beat of Chopi timbila music are among Southern Africa’s most impressive musical traditions.

Material: local hard wood hand polished.
